Not cool [Mar. 14th, 2008|01:45 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
FYI....it is completely unacceptable to use public entries in my journal to post anonymous insults towards people who I consider to be dear friends.

I'm pretty angry about this.  >:(

Posts of this sort will be immediately deleted.

Crazy, huh?

Thankfully the person mentioned is strong, with an ability to let things slide off her back, but it still angers me.

Why would someone do such a thing? That's not appropriate at all.

Boo!
I didn't see it and I am glad.
People can be such jerks
but who cares what cowards say?

I really admire people who are able to let hurtful comments slide off their backs. It's probably my most envied personality trait...I tend to let whatever people say, anonymous or not, ruin my day and send me crawling to a corner to cry.

But yes, people can be jerks. I deleted the comment within like...1 minute of it being posted. But sadly it was a reply to a comment the person they referred to had left on my page, so she saw it too.

Just someone leaving an extremely rude message as a reply to a comment a friend left on a public post, about the person who left the comment. It wasn't you ;)

I deleted it immediately.

This is why a) I don't go public and b) even when I was partially public, I had anon commenting turned off and IP tracing on. You get some dumb nubs out there :(

Yeah...I think I've learned my lesson....very few public blogs from now on. And btw...how do you turn off anon posting??

You can set it per entry manually, but there is a way to change your default setting so all entries won't allow anonymous comments unless you change that post's settings.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, which is when I started screening all comments from people not on my f-list, disallowing anonymous ones, and locking a lot more posts.

It turned out a friend of someone on my flist had a grudge against one of my flisters. They were looking at their friends LJ and saw mine - they read the comments in one entry, and recognized this person they had the grudge against. That person and two others signed up for LJs just so they could insult this person. It was awful. And it happened on my birthday.

I just don't understand some people - how inappropriate is it to use someone else's LJ to strike out at someone they don't like!

I should start doing that too...I didn't realize it was possible.

What gets me is...whoever left this comment had to go to the person's page, look up their friends list to find me, find a blog over a month old where this friend had posted a comment, and write their anonymous comment on it. That's the amount of trouble they went to!

Somewhere you can change the settings on your comments to a default, so you don't have to do it on every entry. You can screen every comment (who has time?), or just screen those from people not on your f-list, or just anonymous ones. Or you can totally disallow anonymous posts.

It's weird that people will go to so much trouble. I had disallowed anonymous comments - so the people that flamed my f-lister had to actually register an LJ to leave her comments! Now I just screen comments from anyone not on my f-list and I lock more stuff. Oh well.

Your recent blog about feeling hurt when a friend posted mocking a costume that was later found to be made by the sister of an other friend reminds me of this situation. I too get rather hurt when someone insults a friend, whether or not they are hurt by it.

I'll have to try to find that setting. I wonder if it's just on paid memberships or free ones too...

*sad*

this is why my recent happiness post was under a friends filter only. I've been under attack off and on for several years. I realise that people like to read me and I enjoy different points of view. But I have had to ban several people from commenting because of spite. It hurts my heart and it is so degrading.

I'm of the opinion that this sort of behaviour doesn't serve anyone. seriously. I wish some people would grow the hell up and leave the playground.

I honestly think that a big part of what got me really started on Live Journal a year or so ago was that, unlike my MySpace page (where I had, previous to then, written all my blogs) I didn't have to worry about friends who now hated me but were still on my MySpace list because I'm so anti-conflict reading what I had to say. I felt vulnerable and exposed there. Here, I feel surrounded by people who really do care and who I care about right back. I feel safe. Which is why a violation like this really bothers me greatly.

*nods head*

I just recently closed off my myspace and made it private due to a guy who lives in Springfield the next town over from Eugene. He seemed nice enough and being a friend of his was no problem until his language set my teeth on edge. I immediately blocked him and set my profile to private. This occurred several days ago. It clearly states on my profile that I am NOT looking for a relationship. Just friends.

It may help if you screen anon comments so when those are written you have the option of unblocking the comment or deleting it. In this way you are moving beyond their pettiness and their hands are effectively tied.

Im sorry you had to deal with this. I despise cowards for if they actually have something to say, they would POST their damn name instead of hiding.

the row of tabs that say HOME-JOURNAL-PROFILE-FRIENDS click on profile. There is a drop down menu that says EDIT PROFILE. click on that.

Under the EDIT PROFILE there is information where it says:

"...You may also want to edit your comment settings or your viewing options".
(click on comment settings) This will take you to MANAGE COMMENT SETTINGS. There you will see the words COMMENT SCREENING. chose to screen comments from Anonymous Commenters..

this being done you will pretty much cut them off at the knees...

Good luck sweetie.

Grace, don't even worry about it. Really, it shouldn't get to you. i laughed it off. It was really pretty minor, in the slew of insults I've gotten lately. Still pretty amateur ;)

I appreciate everything you've said and done though, nonetheless :)
