I need your help!
There was a woman I read about...there was a biography of her I almost requested via interlibrary loan, but I never did end up doing so. All I recall was that she was a rich woman (heiress? noble?) who had portraits of her painted by all the greatest artists of her time, and was known for her crazy parties, and for walking her big cats down the streets at night, wearing just furs.
Has ANYone heard of this person?????? |

OH HOLY CRAP! she sounds like my Grandmother, yah she was filthy rich but I doubt she had portraits done of her by great artists of the 20's and 30's. She hobbed nobbed about Paris and did outrageous things like walking her Leopard in New York City. Danced the tango in Santa Barbara in the square with my Grandfather for 17 years straight walking away with First prize..
Her name was Helen and she had lovely red hair like yours until she went through her "blue" period...She was a hoot..
Not the woman you were thinking of, I know..
Oh my gosh...she sounds absolutely amazing!!! Any woman who walks wild animal pets and dancing tangos and running around Paris is a heroine in my book :)
That is the Marchesa Cassati and her biography is called Infinite Variety
Robin, I am SO impressed that you knew who she was!!! Ten chocolate kisses for you. I spent the last 20 minutes of my desk shift at the library trying different keywords in databases, and finally found her name when searching Google under "woman artists paint her furs" as keywords. LOL
She's amazing. How had you heard of her?

I can't quite remember but I want to say I saw someone blog about her (maybe on LJ) or that they were reading the book about her...it had just come out, or maybe was about to be re-released in English or something. I was totally intrigued and got my hands on the book asap. She was quite a character and her parties were insanely lavish! I have been to her former home in Venice (now the Guggenheim museum) but didn't know about her when I was there.
I can't remember either where I first heard about her, (one of the things that was driving me crazy when I couldn't remember her name) but I admire her greatly!
I've never heard of her until now, but she's currently my new personal hero. :)
Sounds like Madonna? Sorry I'm of no help*, but after following your thread over from [ Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<lj-user="dragoncon_costumes">') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.] Sounds like Madonna?
Sorry I'm of no help*, but after following your thread over from <lj-user="dragoncon_costumes"> and reading several entries, I thought I'd introduce myself and pose a request to add you to my friends list... May I?
(loved the link to the Fair Doors!)
*Likewise, I have no immediate, simple suggestions for your D*Con cosplay, except to say that, based on the few photos I've seen of you, you'd make a dramatic presence no matter who you choose to be. Perhaps something will come to me... Harry Potter costumes might be too elaborate?

Hey there! It actually ended up being the Marchessa Casati, an amazing woman. :)
Thanks for the compliment, and absolutely feel free to add me :) | |
